IM Sangguk claims victory at the High Rollers Single Day

34 players paid NT$ 55,000 (~US$ 1,800) to join the High Rollers Single Day with 9 of them getting a fifty percent discount on the NT$ 5,000 fee for early registration. This brought about a NT$ 1,649,000 (~US$ 54,000) prize pool. After a commanding performance at heads up, Korea’s Im Sangguk claimed victory to pocket NT$ 627,500 and his first ever live tournament title.

Leading up to Sangguk’s win, it was runner-up James Leong who had command at the start of the final table. By the time it reached the bubble round, Leung was down to par but recovered some chips by delivering the bubble.

James Leong

Cashing out first was Soo Jo Kim with his A J unable crack Michael Soyza‘s J J. Chen Si Ren tumbled next with all his chips shipped to Leung. Following him was Soyza who was shut out in 4th place by Natalie Teh. Teh’s A J held over Soyza’s K Q

At three-handed, big pots were being exchanged until Teh lost a round against Sangguk. On a board 2 Q Q 10 7, Sangguk fired a 145k bet, Teh only had 196k behind. She used two time banks before folding. Next hand she was all in with 9 8 and got lucky on Sangguk’s A Q with a nine showing up on the board. However Teh still took 3rd with Sangguk finally successful in taking all of her chips when his A-Q spiked an ace on the river to defeat her pair of sevens on the flop.

Heads up match was 3;1 Sangguk. Leong doubled up with K 3 over J 2 on a board of 7 K 2 9 4. Sangguk was still ahead and immediately reclaimed some of the chips on an uncalled shove. The board was J 10 4 7 Q. Leong was back to where he began at heads up. He shoved with 3 3, Sangguk called with Q 8, the final board was 4 K 7 Q 2 to make for a very happy champion.

Pot Limit Omaha Hi Day 1 results

The first NT$ 8,800 buy-in Pot Limit Omaha Hi event drew 48 eager players for a pie of NT$ 372,500 (~US$ 12,200). The bubble burst at the fall of Kai Paulsen who first took a bad spill against Philip Wang. Paulsen had A A 4 4, Wang with A A Q 2. The cards ran a doozy 7 4 K 5 3. Paulsen’s set fell to Wang’s straight.

Several hands after, Paulsen bubbled with Jacky Min Tse Lee shipping it. This awarded Lee the chip lead which he held until the completion of 15 rounds. The final 6 players bagged up. They return on Sunday, December 1, at 1pm for the final race.
