Hung Sheng Lin crowned APT Main Event champion

The APT Macau Championships 2018 wrapped up its first featured tournament of the festival with Taiwan’s Hung Sheng Lin sweeping half the field of the Final 8 to capture his first APT Main Event championship title. Lin was awarded the HKD 587,000 first place purse, the APT Championship Trophy, and the exclusive APT Championship Ring.

Out of every player in the Final 8, Lin was the most experienced in the APT battleground. Not only has he cashed and won at numerous APT side events, he has also appeared in two APT featured event final tables going as far as 7th place. That’s all changed today after he dominated the competition, eventually defeating Evgeny Kurilenko at the heads up round. As the saying goes, “the third time’s the charm”.

Road to victory

Entering the Final 8 round, Lin came out firing. Within minutes, he won the first big pot of the day, shaving down some of the leader Kurilenko’s towers. He later railed the struggling short stacked Hiroshi Matsumoto in 7th place then banked all of Hele Liu’s chips to amass over half of the chips at play four-handed.

After Kurilenko eliminated Wang Jun in 4th place, the three-handed bout was all Lin. He attacked both Kurilenko’s and Chiu’s stacks, then axed Chiu out of the running in 3rd place. Chiu was all in with A 10 and was dominated throughout by Lin’s A Q. This led to the heads up round with Lin ahead of Kurilenko roughly 1.5:1.

While that gap may not seem much, Kurilenko struggled to reach par. Whenever he would go up, the Lin machine would bring him right back down. Lin began to pull far ahead winning consecutive big pots sending Kurilenko in critical mode. The final hand saw Lin shove with J 8 and Kurilenko with A J. The board ran 9 K J 8 7 for a two pair victory.
