CEBU: The Queen City of the South
Centuries ago, Cebu was already the center of trade and industry in the Southern Philippines. Hundred of years later, the Queen City of the South remains one of the most developed regions in the country with advanced infrastructure facilities, booming economic zones and rich culture and tradition.
Cebu is a melting pot of different lifestyles; influenced by the east and the west; and rooted in tradition but unmindful of the influences of modern innovations. Cebu consists of forty-four developing towns and seven first-rate cities and all of them contribute to the island’s unique identity.
SINULOG FESTIVAL: Cebu’s Grandest Festival
To date, there are more than 40 festivals scattered across the region but none more famous and special than the Sinulog Festival which is celebrated every third Sunday of January.
Sinulog (which comes from the Cebuano word sulog meaning “like water current movement”) is a dance ritual in honor of the miraculous image of the Sto. Niño. It features a street parade with participants in bright colored costumes accompanied by dancing and music of drums, trumpets and native gongs.
Aside from the popular parade, trade fairs, art exhibits, film festivals, pop music events and other activities are also scheduled for the week-long festivities.
