APT Philippines 2017 II: Highlights and APT Player of the Series winners

Just like that, the APT Philippines 2017 II held at Resorts World Manila from September 13-21, has come and gone. In its wake, 13 side event champions had their moment under the spotlight and a new APT Main Event champion was crowned. In total there were over 1,000 entries throughout the series and over USD 500,000 in cash prizes. Here are our top stories and the winners of the APT Player of the Series.

Korea’s Sung Ho Kim becomes the newest Main Event champion

After two deep runs in previous APT Main Events, Korea’s Sung Ho Kim was finally able to bring it all the way to the finish line. Kim overcame a field of 132 entries which included a Final 8 round against a mixed bag of heavy hitters, past champions, and amateurs. Kim eliminated four players at the Final 8 and captured the USD 40,250 first place cash and his first-ever championship title. He becomes the ninth player this year to win the exclusive APT Championship Ring. Kim is also recognized as having won the single largest payout of the series.

Philippines’s Eugene Co shines at the festival

There were many local players and pros in attendance at the festival and out of all of them, it was Eugene Co who shined the most. Co overcame a field of 186 entries at the APT-RWM Opening Event to capture his first-ever APT title. In addition he earned USD 8,190 first prize after striking a three-way deal. One week later, Co was back at it again. He made it into the Final 8 of the Main Event and eventually finished in 4th place. Co added another thick wad to his pocket, this time a total of USD 12,000.

Singapore’s Dhanesh Chainani wins the APT Player of the Series

Once again the APT Player of the Series race was a nail-biter with numerous players very close in points. It wasn’t until the last event concluded that the winners were clearly determined. Here are the APT Philippines 2017 II series winners:

1st Dhanesh Chainani – 235.51 points
2nd Tetsuya Tsuchikawa – 229.17 points
3rd Martin Corpuz – 228.77 points

Dhanesh Chainani edged Tetsuya Tsuchikawa in points after securing his third cash of the series on the final day. Chainani won the APT POS trophy, the exclusive APT POS ring, and the luxury Meister watch. He also qualifies into the Game of Champions. Here are Chainani’s stats at the series:

  • 3rd at the APT-RWM Opening Event
  • 4th at the Pot Limit Omaha Hi
  • 3rd at the Six-Handed Turbo

Second placer Tsuchikawa also won himself a trophy plus another qualifying tally to the Game of Champions. Tsuchikawa concluded the series with four cashes however one those did not generate any points. Here are his stats:

  • 9th at the APT-RWM Opening Event
  • 5th at the NLH One Day Event 1
  • 2nd at the NLH Two-Day Event
  • 13th at the Main Event (no points earned)

Tsuchikawa may have missed the high chair at the APT POS but at the 2017 APT Player of the Year race, he is in full command with a 266.24 lead over his closest challenger.

Rounding out the top three winners was Filipino Martin Corpuz who also had multiple strong finishes. With his victory at the Monster Stack and his placement at the APT POS, he gets on the board of the Game of Champions.
