Sparrow Cheung awarded the Championships Event title, Victor Chong runner-up

Instead of playing out the heads up round, Sparrow Cheung and Victor Chong struck an ICM deal that ended the game with Cheung awarded the Championships Event title. Congratulations to both players for a fantastic run!

Sparrow Cheung pocketed HKD 428,000, the APT Championship Trophy, and the exclusive APT Championship Ring. 

Victor Chong earned HKD 421,000 for his runner-up finish and the runner-up Championships Event trophy.

After seven hours at the felt the Final 8 is now down to the last two players! One of these players will be crowned the new APT Championships Event winner! Whoever wins it will have scored their first major APT championship title.

Leading in chips is Sparrow Cheung with 2,810,000 and not far behind is Victor Chong with 2,630,000. This is familiar ground for Chong who placed second at the same event last year right here in MBP.

Michael Tran eliminated in 3rd place – HKD 235,700

After getting involved in two pots that didn’t bring him added ammo, Michael Tran moved all in with K J and ran right into Sparrow Cheung’s A A. The board dragged out Q 5 2 8 9, and that was it for Tran.

Tran entered the Final 8 as the shortest stacked and impressively laddered up all the way to 3rd place. He earned HKD 235,700 for his deep run.


Sparrow Cheung charges to 2.2M, Victor Chong dips a little

Sparrow Cheung is back as the chip leader after winning a raise war against Victor Chong. Sparrow raised to 125k, Chong three-bet to 375k, Sparrow jammed, and quick fold from Chong.


Victor Chong rises to 2.5M

We are three-handed here and the average stack is now at 1.8M. Victor Chong and Michael Tran faced off with the latter raising to 130k from the button and Chong defending on the big blind. At the flop 4 5 8, no bets. On the 9 tun, Chong led 170k and Tran called. On the river A, no bets again and Chong won with 6 7 straight. Chong up to 2.5M.


Masato Yokosawa exits in 4th place – HKD 170,100

Short stacked Masato Yokosawa moved all in with A 2 and Sparrow Cheung joined him with A K. The board ran Q J A 5 5 and that was the end of Yokosawa.

Yokosawa had an impressive run at the Championships Event, coming into the Final 8 second in chips and taking all the way to 4th place. He earned HKD 170,100 for his deep finish.

Michael Tran shows another bluff

Michael Tran tanked another player then showed his bluff for the added touch. The hand saw Victor Chong raise to 110k and Tran called from the button. At the flop 8 A 3, Chong c-bet 80k, Tran raised to 190k, Chong tanked. Chong folded and Tran showed his Q J bluff.

Masato Yokosawa is down to just 11bbs after losing another chunk of chips to Victor Chong. The bout began with a raise to 85k by Yokosawa and Chong defending on his big blind. At the flop 5 4 7, it was check-check. On the 7 turn, Chong bet 100k and Yokosawa called. On the river 4, Chong continued and sent out 150k, and still Yokosawa called. Chong opened K 5 two pair and Yokosawa mucked.
