Side events: Vamerdino Magsakay wins his second High Roller title; Head Hunter bags up at Final 8

Filipino player Vamerdino Magsakay has done it again! Fresh from a high rollers win last night, Magsakay took down another one for his second Single Day High Rollers title in just two days of work. For his efforts, he earned a payout deal of  VN₫ 66,040,000 (~US$ 2,888) after defeating Nguyen Hoa Thinh at heads up. Congratulations to the champion! Magsakay became the first player to win two events this series. He moves into top 5 of the APT Player of the Series race.

Vamerdino Magsakay – Second High Rollers

Unlike the previous day’s turnout, this edition barely filled a table with only 6 players pulling up seats. With buy in at VN₫ 22,000,000 (~US$ 962), it built a prize pool of VN₫ 116,040,000 (~US$ 5,075). First to go was Filipino pro David Erquiaga followed by Super High Roller sixth placer Vu The Tuan. At four handed, Nguyen Duc Bien and Magsakay engaged in three showdowns that sent Bien swinging out. Yik “Ray” Chiu missed his chance at the money again, falling next. This brought about heads up with Thinh slightly ahead of Magasakay in chips. Instead of running the bubble, the pair opted to chop the money and leave VN₫ 16,040,000 plus the trophy for the eventual winner.

It was a grind for the title as both players earned their share of pots. Magsakay picked up pace and held the lead when the first all in clash was tabled. Thinh doubled up with A J against Magsakay’s A 10. This crippled Magsakay down to 6 BB. Looking like it was over for the Filipino, he went on a double up spree, winning three shoves to regain the lead by a small margin.

Magsakay’s first doubled up was A 5 dominating K 2; his second was 10 9 two pair over ace high; to zoom back on top, his A Q held firm against Thinh’s A J. The successive losses sent Thinh down to 4 BB from which he could not recover. The final hand was Thinh A 4 flush, Magsakay with 5 5 full house on a board 5 7 3 10 3

The Head Hunter event drew 68 entries for a main pot of VN₫ 391,680,000 and a bounty pool of VN₫ 136,000,000. Seven hours in, the money was reached at the fall of Hong Kong’s Chi Chung Ho to Terry Nguyen. Chi was all in with K J, Nguyen challenged with K 3, a three spiked the flop and held.

The remaining 12 players  continued until the the final 8 was reached. After Jules Blondel busted in 12th place, No Limit Hold’em champion Sebastien Clot followed in 11th place, then Philippines player David Erquiaga was denied a final table seat when his pocket sevens were outdrawn by Satoshi Kuriga‘s A-7 ace on the board. To end Day 1, Singapore’s To Siu Yan eliminated Vietnam’s Tran Trung Hieu with J J set dominating A K that missed.
