APT Philippines 2014 Main Event

Gonzales Climbs

Level: 9 Blinds: 300-600 Ante: 75

We didn’t catch the crucial hands for Martin Gonzales so we asked him how he got to around 100,000 at this point. According to the Filipino, he remembers two hands that put him in the top spot (or near it).

First hand, Gonzales had A 8 and he bet 1,300 preflop with one caller.

Both players checked the flop J J 9 and on the turn 2 Gonzales fired 1,500 and saw his opponent flat-call. The river 4 arrived and he fired 5,000. The opponent replied with a shove and Gonzales quickly called. The opponent had king-jack for trips but wasn’t enough to beat Gonzales’s nut flush.

In the second hand– which brought him near to 100K in chips, he held pocket aces against two shorter-stacked opponents. The bullets held and he became one of the players with the bigger stacks for Day 1B.

Schwippert railed by Sik

Level: 9 Blinds: 300-600 Ante: 75

Bae Sung Sik railed re-entry player Jan-Eric Schwippert with his Pocket Nines when it connected with a set on the board.

Flo Owns Koh

Level: 9 Blinds: 300-600 Ante: 75

On a board of A K K 3 8, Norbert Koh (Singapore) fired 3,550 to the middle with already a brewing pot. Florencio Campomanes (Philippines) stared down Koh and raised to 13,500. Koh tanked for a bit before making the fold.

Chris Chong vs Yu Kurita

Level: 9 Blinds: 300-600 Ante: 75

From the utg seat, Yu Kurita raised to 1300 and was reraised by Chris Chong to make it 2800. Kurita called and both players watched the flop land 3 6 K. Kurita led out for 2000 and Chong smooth-called. On the turn of 8, Kurita checked and Chong shoved forcing Kurita to fold her hand.

Steicke Ousts Short Stack

Level: 9 Blinds: 300-600 Ante: 75

A very short-stacked player with just under 3,000 left shoved and David Steicke decided to flat-call. Two other players originally who limped into the pot folded their hands.

Steicke: 2 2
Opponent: A 10

Flop A 6 6 did give the ace but the turn 2 gave the lead back to Steicke. River was not another ace or ten and another one bites the dust. We’re down to 99 players for Day 1B

Johnny Tan’s ladies burn Runas’s rockets

Level: 9 Blinds: 300-600 Ante: 75

After a sequence of raises, Johnny Tan and Tofie Runas found themselves all in preflop. Runas had Pocket Aces against Tan’s Pocket Queens. And although Runas had the nuts preflop, he ran into an unlucky board 10-K-9-7-J which gave Tan a straight and Runas a very short stack.

Tan Surviving

Level: 9 Blinds: 300-600 Ante: 75

Now working on a very low stack, Johnson Tan is scared on re-raising his opponents.

In one hand, with the flop 2 8 Q already tabled and facing a 3,000 bet, Tan raised to 10,000 to force a fold from the original bettor. Tan has around 25,000 at this point but remains very much alive.
