On the second day of the Asian Poker Tour (APT) Philippines 2013, the first-ever champions of the newest APT side event, the 2-Man Team Heads Up were named. Jose Drilon from the Philippines and Mandeep Narang from India took home the title in the team event and went home with $4,270 between them.
It was far from an easy task as the duo had to go through grueling heads-up battles for roughly 9 hours but none as difficult as the last round against the Korean pair of Soo Jo Kim and Min Soo Kim, who settled for the runner-up finish and $3,500.
Being a best-of-three affair, Drilon and Narang actually lost the second game but recovered just in time by taking the final game.
In final hand of the second game, the Korean duo held K♥ Q♥ on a flop of A♠ J♣ 6♥ and was up against their opponents’ two pair A♣ J♠. They found one of their outs on their turn 10♥ and their straight held forcing a do-or-die 3rd game.
But in the third game, Drilon and Narang found back their groove. In what would be the final hand, they went all-in after seeing the flop of 6♦ 4♥ Q♠ and saw their opponents make the call.
Drilon/Narang: 6♠ 4♠
Soo Joo/Min Soo: Q♦ K♦
The turn and river did not help the Koreans as Drilon and Narang took down the pot and secured their claim as the event’s champions.
“There’s a big difference between the individual poker game than these two-man event as it continues to change player and action,” said a very jovial Drilon when asked how was it any different than a regular poker game.
“I love it!” added Narang “You can’t make mistakes especially that it involves teamwork.”
Also on tap yesterday was the Manila Millions super high-rollers event. A total of 18 players ponied up the HK$ 1M buy-in even as four others decided to re-buy to create a hefty price pool of HK$22M.
