China’s Wang Meng leads the final 59 runners of the Main Event

It was a thunderous Main Event Day 2 with 182 players charging the tables of the APT Macau Championships 2018 festival at Macau Billionaire Poker. The first hour of the day produced an additional 48 entries to drive the numbers up to a smashing total of 377. The prize pool also surged to a juicy HKD 3,619,200 which will eventually be shaved down by the final 63 players.

During the last level of regulation play, the money bubble was breached with Singapore’s Lim Min Soon railing China’s Lei Liu. You can read up on the hand here. Day 2 ended with China’s Wang Meng bagging up the largest stack of 518,000.

Meng’s rise to the top didn’t happen in one big swooping hand, instead it was the steady grind all day. He started out in 57th rank with a slightly above average stack. Late in the day, he came into our radar after he shipped in a big pot with his K K full house on a board of 5 9 K 9 8 then claimed two more within that orbit to amass a huge stack.

Closing the day in second command was Japan’s Yoichi Uesugi with 470,500. Unlike Meng, Uesugi entered the day high in the ranks in 6th position. For most of the rounds, he maintained an above average stack until it ballooned just before the bubble round with a double up through China’s Wenling Gao. Uesugi won with top two pair over Gao’s missed flush draw.

Rounding out the top five leaders were China’s Hele Liu with 432,500, Yudong Yang with 426,500, and Singapore’s Lim Min Soon at 402,000.

Also surviving was the day’s entering chip leader, China’s Zhang Chen Xu. Chen Xu had a swinging day at the felt, bobbing up and down the mean. She closed with a below average stack of 104,000. Tetsuya Tsuchikawa, Sparrow Cheung, and Hung Sheng Lin made the cut as well; interestingly, these three pros were at the final table of last year’s Macau Championships Event.

Just before the bagging time, Norway’s Henrik Tollefsen was eliminated in 60th place. He was the last of the decorated APT champions in the field with Choong Kian Weng, Iori Yogo, and Hisashi Ogi all falling early.

You can read up on the day’s action in the Live Updates. Today’s survivors will return on Monday, May 1 for Day 3. They will play down to the Final 8. Everyone is now guaranteed HKD 19,500. Below are the first payouts of the event.
