Super Sunday at the Asian Poker Tour in Macau kicked off with grand success at the integrated entertainment complex, the City of Dreams, as the extra Main Event Day 1A provided new opportunities for some of the sport’s most exciting players to take part in Asia’s premier event. Super Sunday also included the Ladies of Poker side event, the all-female tournament which crowned Macau’s Queen of Poker.
For the first time in Tour history, the nine-day festival of poker, which runs from November 6-14, included an additional Day 1A, which allowed players with weekday work commitments a chance to take part in the Main Event. Day 1B is November 10 and Day 1C is on November 11, with the Main Event buy-in set at HK$32,000 + HK$2,500.
Team China’s David Chiu, who has four World Series of Poker bracelets and over US$7 million in career earnings, Norway’s Lars Wik and Australian Jonathan Karamalikis were some of the Day 1A feature players.
At the end of Day 1A, it was Zhou Chun Lei from China who was the chip leader with 56,375 leading 8 other players who also advanced to Day 2 of the Main Event set for November 12, Friday starting at 1PM.
Said APT Chief Executive Officer Mr. Jeff Mann: “This is the first time that we’ve ever started our Main Event on a Sunday and today was a great success. I think the players who took part today really appreciated an early Day 1, which catered to their needs. Look for a Sunday start to be a feature of APT events moving forwards.”
A host of side events accompanies the Main Event, including Sunday’s Ladies of Poker Event, which the APT introduced to the tournament this year. “I’m very happy with APT Macau’s first Ladies of Poker side event. More and more women are taking up the sport of poker and I think all of the women who took part in today’s event had a great time.”
And for this ladies-only tournament it was Lisa Mccabe from the United Kingdom who was crowned champion and who went home with the APT Macau 2010 Ladies of Poker title.
Other exciting side events include Tuesday’s High-Roller Event, which was won last year by Hong Kong resident David Steicke, Friday’s Battle of the Nations and Saturday’s Celebrity Tournament, which will raise funds for Caritas Macau.
Poker legends Johnny Chan and Phil Ivey, who have 10 and 8 World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets respectively, are expected to join the Main Event and will play their Day 1s later this week.
City of Dreams, in collaboration with APT is hosting The Asian Poker Tour in Macau.
