APT Side Event Roundup and ‘Medal’ Tally

PASAY CITY, Philippines – With all focus on the Asian Poker Tour (APT) 2022 Philippines Main Event, lots of excitement went down in the multitude of Side Events that took place in the midst of the action during the period and beyond. Those five are now part of the history books but will now be revisited in this roundup. 

Event #9: PhP65K Single-Day High-Rollers

This had 37 entries with seven finishing ITM. Japan’s YASUHIRO WAKI–fresh out of his Main Event bust-out–captured the crown and the top purse of PhP740,100 (US$12,956.00) while decorated Corine Shi of Singapore settled for second for PhP475,600.00 (US$8,328,00). The host nation’s Edgar Asehan claimed third for PhP320,600.00 (US$5,613.00).

Event #10: PhP22K 2-Day NLH

It was the seventeenth APT title for Fil-Norwegian KAI DANILO PAULSEN and also his third cash of this leg. He was the  last man standing in a field of 89 and also pocketed PhP346,000.00 (US$6,061.00) while fending off two Filipinos in Jose Cheung and John Calamiong, who received PhP328,600.00 (US$5,755.00) and PhP308,000.00 (US$5,395.00) respectively.

Event #11: PhP107.5K 2-Day High-Rollers 

This event entered its Final 8 just as the Main Event concluded and was quickly thrust onto the TV Table. In the end, the “Malaysian Sensation” VICTOR CHONG capped off the win as midnight struck on his birthday to upend Australia’s Ryan Hong and take down the top prize of PhP1,892,400.00 (US$33,145.00). Hong picked up a cool PhP1,261,500.00 (US$22,095.00) for his runner-up placing while Japan’s Toru Wakamatsu got third for PhP877,000.00 (US$15,361.00). This was a wild event that had 69 entries.

Event #12: PhP22K 2-Day Short-Deck Championship 

This new and intriguing variant of the game drew in twenty entries with four players ITM. MARTIJN GERRITS of the Netherlands nailed his first APT win and his fourth cash of these proceedings. Gerrits, a veteran campaigner who had also won a Short Deck title in Korea in 2019, got PhP189,700.00 (US$3,322.00) as second place went to American Timothy Frazin for PhP101,800.00 (US$1,783.00) while third was snared by Lim Choon Kwang of Singapore for PhP59,200.00 (US$1,037.00).

Event #14: PhP76K Single-Day High-Rollers

Fresh off his runner-up finish at the Main Event, Filipino ace David “Dave Spade” Erquiaga made another deep run in a field that had 34 entries to face WEN FANG PO of Chinese Taipei in the final duel. In the end, Erquiaga had to once again settle for another runner-up finish with Wen emerging victorious for his second APT High-Rollers trophy and the top prize of PhP758,900.00 (US$13,297.00) while Erquiaga got PhP658,900.00 (US$11,545.00). Third went to local favorite Czardy Rivera for PhP350,300.00 (US$6,138.00).
