Basic Poker Psychology (Part 2)

This week sees the next article in the series on basic poker psychology. Cards obviously play a big part in poker, but so do the mind-set of you and your opponents. If you can master basic poker psychology then you will be well on your way to be a solid poker player.

Don’t run before you can walk

The subject of poker strategy is a vast and complex topic; there are many aspects to consider and lots of concepts to learn if you want to truly master the game. If you want to outplay the best players in the world, then you will probably need to develop your own unique playing style and employ the poker strategies that are best suited to you.

However, the chances are that you are not playing against the best poker players in the world – at least not yet – and so it is perfectly possible that you can beat the opponents you are playing without having to employ advanced strategies and concepts. In fact, unless you are playing at particularly high stakes then you will find you can be pretty successful just by keeping things simple. While it is obviously important to put some thought into your play and the decisions you make, it is all too easy to get too analytical and start trying to second guess your own thought process.

Poker really doesn’t have to be complicated, especially when you are a beginner and even as you start to progress. It is important that you take development as a poker player at a reasonable pace – you don’t need to worry about advanced concepts and strategies just yet. If you keep things simple and just focus on getting the basics right and making sound decisions then you will probably do just fine. You should keep learning about poker strategy and trying to improve, but you will only mess your own mind up if you try to do too much too quickly.

Please visit us again next week, when we talk further about the basics of poker psychology.
