Make sure you know the basic rules of tournament poker. It will make you a better player.

Playing in a live tournament can be both exciting and nerve-wracking so this is the first instalment of a weekly tip from the Asian Poker Tour to help you on your way. Our first tip is to learn the basic rules of a poker tournament. Ask one of the friendly Asian Poker Tour staff for a copy of the rules the event will play by – in our case, it’s those from the Tournament Directors Association along with additional local rules. Take a look through and familiarise yourself with them as the rules are in place to provide a fair playing environment for all players. If you don’t know what a particular rule means, again ask one of the APT tournament staff who will be happy to explain. Learning the rules will help you avoid receiving a penalty and keep you on course for your first tournament win.
