The third day of the APT Philippines 2014 at the Resorts World Manila turned out to be more than expected as a horde of poker pros came to play and broke the record for the most entries in a side event in APT history.
A total of 225 entries were listed in the DafaBet Head Hunter event with a buy-in of $300. The record-number generated a prize pool of $49,860; easily the highest so far—save for the High Rollers– in the eight-day poker festivities set from April 30 to May 7.
Ha Duong of Vietnam masterfully navigated over that huge field, bagged the title and took the lion’s share of that pot worth $10,765. Twenty-six other players placed ITM.
“I am really happy with the huge turnout. We established a new record in one of the side events in the previous stop and we actually broke that tonight in the head-hunter event with 225 players!” declared an ecstatic Jeff Mann, Chief Executive Officer of the Asian Poker Tour.
Mann was referring to the MegaSportsWorld Deepstack Turbo side event in the APT Asian Series Cebu 2014 last February when 222 players signed up for the tournament and established the record for the highest number of entries in an APT side event. That record is busted now.
Duong is already a one-time APT champion winning the main event in the APT Asian Series Cambodia in 2012.
Meanwhile, Philippines’ Andrea Tiglao was crowned the Ladies of Poker event champion. She beat a field of 37 entries in the tourney exclusively for women.
Poker action continues on Saturday, May 3 as cards fly in the APT Philippines 2014 Main Event starting at 1:00 p.m. Two other tourneys—the DafaPoker NLHE event ($350 buy-in) at 3:00 p.m. and the Last Chance M.E. Mega Satellite ($350 buy-in) are also scheduled later in the day. For full details visit the APT Philippines 2014 Events Schedule.
