Korea’s Lim Yohwan put the pedal to the metal at Day 2 of the APT Philippines Championships II 2018 – CHAMPIONSHIPS EVENT – dusting several players along the way to bag up an enormous stack of 947,000.
Day 2 took off with Yohwan leading in the 84 qualifiers from the combined starting days. Halfway through the day, he created a big gap between him and the chasing pack after two heated encounters with Han Wool Jang that sent the latter packing. Yohwan continued to dominate the felt, eventually putting the light out on the Main Event champion Lester Edoc. During the hand, Edoc was all in with mid pair flush draw holding Q♥ 9♥ on a flop of 9♦ 10♥ 7♥ but couldn’t improve against Yohwan’s 9♣ 9♠ set when the turn and river produced 5♣ and 3♣ respectively.
Closing Day 2 in second position was German pro Marvin Rettenmaier with 666,000. Rettenmaier is undoubtedly the most accomplished player in the field with numerous major international titles under his belt.
Rettenmaier entered Day 2 in the middle of the pack and like Yohwan, he dominated his table, grinding down players throughout the day. Midway in, he ended the hopes of Alexis Lim, and during the bubble stage, he banked a couple of big pots against Yoon Ho Kwak.
Rounding out the top three was USA’s Nehmee Alegado with 525,000. Alegado shipped in a big pot early on against Masatoshi Tanaka. His aggressive bets led to Tanaka folding pocket kings to his pocket sixes. Alegado also earned another big one against Bobby Zhang with pocket aces over A-K.
Also making it through were Jae Hyun Lim with 517,000 and Joshua Chargualaf with 460,000. Lim was running third at the start of Day 2 and maintained his high position while Chargualaf stormed to the upper ranks during the opening two levels where he parked until bagging.
Three APT decorated champions bagged up chips as well, Feng Zhao, Hung Sheng Lin, and series defending champion, Japan’s Iori Yogo.
Among the players hitting the rail today, falling the hardest was Filipino JC Sayo on the bubble. His elimination wrapped up Day 2 with 29 players remaining. We have the chip counts posted below. You can read up on the day’s action in our Live Updates.
The Championships Event is the second featured tournament of the series. Day 2 added another 20 entries to bring the total to 174. With each entry at PHP 82,500, the prize pool grew to a juicy PHP 12,658,500. The money begins to flow tomorrow in Day 3. Though we are still two days from crowning a champion, first place is due to pocket a sizable PHP 2,819,900.
Day 3 begins at 1pm on Sunday, September 23. With everyone in the money, players will be hunting down a Final 8 berth. Blinds resume at Level 17 4000 – 8000 ante 4000 with 42:44 left in the round. Average stack is 300,000 with 8,700,000 total chips in play.
