Side Events: Vamerdino Magsakay prevails at the Single Day High Rollers; Ta Khanh Linh wins the Single Day NL Hold’em

Players from the Philippines may be small in numbers but they have certainly taken early command of the inaugural APT Vietnam Phu Quoc 2022. Two nights ago, Florencio Campomanes shipped the Super High Rollers then last night, fellow countryman Vamerdino Magsakay locked up the Single Day High Rollers. Let’s go ahead and add in Joseph Talamayan who topped Main Event Day 1A. At the No Limit Hold’em Single Day event, Vietnam’s Ta Khanh Linh won it for his first ever APT trophy. Here are the highlights.

Vamerdino Magsakay prevails at the Single Day High Rollers

The Single Day High Rollers drew 27 to the felt and 2 re-entries for 29 total entrants and a prize pool of VN₫ 562,600,000 (~US$ 24,580). After knocking out four players, Filipino pro Vamerdino Magsakay engaged in a challenging heads up match that led to a deal and eventually the victory for VN₫ 202,400,000 (~US$ 8,800). Congratulations to the champion!

Magsakay’s butchery started during the bubble round when he delivered a nasty bad beat to Phan Hong Minh with 7 7 cracking A A on a board of 4 Q 10 8 6. Phan exited on the bubble and Magsakay amassed a monster pile.

Final table

Five handed ran for several hands with Magsakay grinding down his tablemates. This forced Benjamin Schoepfer all in, Bui Nam Long risked every chip as well, and both Takeya Naoto and Magsakay joined for a four way clash. At the runout 9 6 10 2 10, Magsakay’s A 9 two pair dominated to scoop up the pot and dust two players simultaneously. Next showdown, Minh A Nguyen three bet shoved his 5 5 only to fall in 3rd place to Magsakay’s 10 10. This brought about heads up with Magsakay sitting on 95 BB against Naoto’s 14 BB.

With his massive stack, Magsakay exerted pressure, bringing Naoto down to to 5 BB. On desperate mode, Naoto gambled it all on 8 3 and outdrew Magasakay’s Q 4 for a double up. Naoto went on to double up twice more, Q Q over A 5, and K K over A 10, to give him the lead.

In disbelief, Magsakay battled back and landed a double up holding 9 9 full house. A ICM deal was then discussed and reached. They played for an extra VN₫ 5 Million and the trophy. From there, Magsakay proceeded to grind down Naoto again and this time he closed it out. On a turn board 7 2 2 6, Magsakay pushed 2 3 trips, Naoto tank-called for everything with Q 6 draw, the river was J

Ta Khanh Linh wins the Single Day No Limit Hold’em

The Single Day No Limit Hold’em clocked in at just under six hours with Vietnam’s Ta Khanh Linh closing it out for VN₫ 76,390,000 (~US$ 3,340). Linh topped a field of 23 entries to capture his first ever APT title and trophy.

Picking up the event during bubble time, it burst when a player shoved and fell with 5 5 against Tran Nguyen Hao‘s A A. With the money secured, the final four players battled for the win. The lone Japanese contender, Mao Kumagai, doubled up with pocket tens but her Q Q failed to do the job with Ng Minh Ten‘s A K forming the higher flush on the board 9 J 8 3 5. Kumagai could not recover and lost the rest of her chips to Ng.

At three-handed, Linh banged heads with Ng and got the best of him with A Q dominating A 4. Facing Tran for the title, both were deep in blinds but that didn’t stop them from throwing it all in. The final hand was Linh K Q, Tran A 6, the board was 9 K 8 3 Q for a glorious two pair to Linh.
