Event recap
It has been two and a half years since the Asian Poker Tour hosted a live event at partner venue Resorts World Manila and what better way to celebrate its return than with something new and exciting. The series opener was the first taste and it was nothing short of a smashing success. With 246 in attendance, it absolutely crushed the guarantee for a richer PHP 738,000 prize pool. Adding more to the thrill were the 25 mystery bounty draws where three rewards worth PHP 44,000 each were up for grabs.
In the end, Marquez may have knocked out the most number of players but it was Daypuyart who drew the luckiest bounties. Daypuyart won not one but two of the top rewards plus a couple of small ones to collect a total of PHP 96,500 in bounties. Adding in the PHP 94,800 payout for second place, Daypuyart walked away as the richest earner of the day.
Race to the final table
The money was reached after JR Villanueva eliminated very short stacked Mark Pagsuyuin on the bubble with 9♠ 9♥ over A♣ 6♣ that bricked. From there, busts were at every turn. Leading up to the final table, Marquez had the most kills to earn him three mystery bounty draws. Short stacked Orlando Santos dropped out in 9th place to Daypuyart to form the final table. This was Daypuyart’s second bounty ticket with the first awarding him the lowest amount of PHP 2,000. On this next pull, it was for one of the coveted PHP 44,000 top prizes.
Final table recap
The final table ran a grueling four hours. Action kicked off with Marquez at the helm followed closely by Junnie Pamplona. The first hand was a quick double up for Joseroy Jeremias with A♠ Q♥ staying ahead of Marquez’s 5♣ 6♣. Rommel Angeles then stepped up to take down numerous pots, including a big one that sent Rory Magallanes‘ stack into the danger zone. Magallanes eventually exited in 8th place at the hands of Joseph Carbonell. The next showdown saw Daypuyart’s 8♦ 8♠ get very lucky, landing the two outer on the turn to crack Pamplona’s A♥ A♣. Not so lucky for Villanueva who lost all his chips to Carbonell, then Marquez finished off Pamplona with K♣ K♠ dominating K♥ Q♥.
Action slowed at five handed with Angeles widening his lead. Daypuyart scored another double up and pumped in more chips by railing Jeremias with A-J dominating A-10. Down to four players, Marquez shipped a three way shove when his J♣ J♠ lucked out against chip leader Daypuyart’s Q♣ Q♠ with a full house on the flop. In turn, Carbonell A♦ 8♦ was eliminated. Just before departing, Carbonell still had one bounty ticket to redeem He drew the last PHP 44,000 top prize. Shortly after, Angeles also met Marquez’s axe to bring about heads up.
The final duel saw Marquez way ahead over 6:1. Daypuyart managed to cut the gap to 2:1. From there, the pair agreed on an even chop of both the remaining money and bounty rewards. They then flipped for the trophy. Marquez won it with J♦ 6♦ beating Q♥ 7♣ on a board 8♦ 6♣ 2♣ A♠ 4♦.
