The record-breaking 442-field of the APT Championships Philippines 2017 Main Event saw 240 players head to the felt for Day 2 at Resorts World Manila. After nine hours of scheduled play, the field trimmed down significantly leaving only 57 players still in the running. Closing out Day 2 with a monstrous stack backing him up was Korea’s SJ Kim with a towering 849,500 in chips.
For Kim, Day 2 began with him sitting in the upper twelve percent of the chip counts. After a few levels in, he engaged in a pot against big stacked Haibo Jiang and Jared Skinner that brought his stack to over 300K. Kim met Jiang again on another big pot, this time with his 7♥ 8♥ two pair victorious on a board of 7♣ 8♠ 2♥ 3♦ 6♦. This drove his stack to over 400K, and still he wasn’t done.
Just before the last level of the day, Annie Bordallo shoved all her chips in on a completed board of 10♠ 2♦ 6♥ 3♣ 10♥ and Kim called thus exposing her 9♠ 7♠ bluff and winning all her chips with his 4♦ 5♥ straight. Before the day ended, Kim won another big pot, this time against Anton Del Rosario who raised Kim on the river with his A♥ 2♥ on a board of 6♦ K♣ K♦ Q♠ 8♥ but Kim called and opened up K♠ J♣ for a winning trips. If Kim keeps this up, he will be in fine shape to capture his second APT Main Event championship title.
Finishing the day running second in chips was Japan’s Asakura Yasuyuki with 630,000 in chips. Yasuyuki entered Day 2 running third in chips and impressively maintained his standing throughout. Although we didn’t catch his winning hands, we will definitely have him in our immediate sights on Day 3. Trailing him by just a small margin is Filipino Michael De Leon with 623,000 in chips. De Leon got lucky a couple of times today but his biggest takedown was when he crushed Kim Gab Yong’s straight at the flop with a dominating full house on the river.
Other players who made it through were the day’s entering chip leaders, Andre Peh and Euryd Rivera. Both players are still sitting within the 100K range. Also included in the lineup are a few past APT Main Event champions, Mike Takayama who held the chip lead for most of the day, Linh Tran, and Ha Duong.
Day 3 will begin at 1pm tomorrow, Tuesday, May 2nd. They will play down to the Final 8 with the USD 428,740 prize pool starting to flow at 45 players. Only 11 are insured with bubble protection.
