Garberg, Cabaling, Maeda APT Champs on Third Day

The third day of the APT Asian Poker Series Manila 2015 at the Resorts World Manila in Pasay City, Philippines produced three more APT champions led by Norway’s Markus Garberg, who won the High Rollers event and became the biggest winner so far in the poker festivities this week.

Two other players, Ferlyn Cabaling of the Philippines and Azusa Maeda of Japan won the Ladies of Poker and NLH Multi Re-Buy + 1 Add-On events, respectively.

Garberg’s effort was consistent throughout the two days of play in the high-stakes game, which drew 45 entries for a total prize pool of PHP 4,365,000. The Norwegian pro won the lion’s share of which, worth PHP 1,528,000, after outplaying local bet and high-stakes regular Florencio Campomanes in the heads-up round.

Campomanes had about 700,000 in chips to Garberg’s 400,000-plus when heads-up play started but it was the latter who eventually got all the chips. The final hand featured Garberg’s big slick against Campomanes’ pocket sevens after a four-bet shove from the Filipino.

The Norwegian called, the dealer boarded 5 10 8 A 5 and the high-stakes title went to Garberg.

Garberg’s stack actually took a hit when play was three-handed going up against a couple of hometown bets in Campomanes and Andrew Gaw.

I got pretty lucky early and got a lot of chips from one Chinese guy,” Garberg said. “I was the short stack during in the three-handed and I knew I just had to go from hand to hand and stay focused.”

In the post-tourney interview, Garberg admitted that he was motivated to play well and win something in this APT stop after seeing close friends Thomas Ward and Henrik Tollefsen win some serious cash in the last APT Asian Poker Series in Cebu last August.

In Cebu, Ward finished in 2nd place in the High Rollers and 17th in the Main Event while Tollefsen went all the way to the title in the Main Event. Ward also cashed in this High Rollers ending up in 4th place.

Meanwhile, it was an All-Filipino affair in the money round of the Ladies of Poker event with Cabaling coming out on top for her 5th Ladies of Poker title and PHP 73,700. All from the host country, Maria Argao, Guia Guison, Giselle Raloto and Diane Tan finished 2nd through 5th in the all-ladies event that drew 38 entries.
