Familiar Grounds: Czardy Rivera on Top After Day 1A

The big names came to play in Day 1A of the APT Asian Series Cebu 2014 Main Event but the biggest plays came from the Philippines’ Czardy Rivera and his effort was enough to push him to the top and become the chip-leader in the tournament held at the All-In Poker Club in Cebu, Philippines

It’s an all too familiar setting for the Filipino who has consistently played well in a number of APT tourneys including winning the main event title in the APT Asian Series Manila 2013 just last October.

Rivera towed 47 others to Day 2 after amassing 140,500 chips. A total of 131 players signed up for Day 1A— a figure that is very well on pace to break the Cebu record set in 2012, when 251 runners participated in the main event.

Main Event Day 1A Chip Leader: Czardy Rivera

Among the chip leaders is Filipino Lester Edoc, who lost in the heads-up round versus Rivera in that Asian Series roughly four months ago. Edoc has 99,200 in chips or good for fifth place. Completing the top five in the chip counts are George Jason Rankin of the United Kingdom with 130,100; Elan Zak (Philippines) with 115,800 and Rodel Amplayo (Philippines) with 100,200.

Other popular players who survived Day 1A were Samad Razavi (40,000), Iori Yogo (14,800), Carlos Chang (34,200), Kosei Ichinose (44,800), Jav Medina (80,500), SJ Kim (22,500), Percy Yung (73,800), Choi Byung Kyoo (69,300) and Bryan Huang (85,200).

Day 2 is scheduled at 1 p.m. on Monday.

Some notable pros who got the boot were Maria Carmen Esdaile (Philippines), Mandeep Narang (India), Richard Marquez (Philippines) and Kristian Faering (Denmark) among others. However, they can still re-enter in Day 1B, which begins play at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Two popular side events are also scheduled on the same day, the DafaPoker Pot Limit Omaha Hi and the Deep Stack Turbo set at 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., respectively. For full details, check the APT Asian Series Cebu 2014 Events page.
