A Perfect Start: First Day of APT Asian Series Cebu 2014 Draws Big Crowd

If the opening day of the APT Asian Series Cebu 2014 is any indication, it looks like APT’s return to the Philippines’ Queen City of the South will be a very successful one— better than past APT events in Cebu—as a large crowd joined the action on the first day of the first event of the year in Asia’s most prestigious poker series.

Two side events were scheduled Wednesday, the NLH Multi-Rebuy + 1 Add-On and the Ante Up for Charity events plus a pair of satellite tourneys to the main event.

84 runners registered for the No Limit Hold’em  event and produced a total prize pool of PHP 768,200 while 47 players were generous enough to register in the charity event; where a third of the prize pool or PHP 94,000 will be donated for the rebuilding of Cebu City Medical Center. The total players for the Ante Up for Charity is a record-high for any APT charity event held in the Philippines.

Back-to-back APT Player of the Year Samad Razavi is not too keen in giving up his throne as Asia’s most consistent tournament player too as he joined the kick-off tournament knowing that it’s never too early to be racking up points as he aims for three-in-a-row. Last season’s APT POY runner-up–Maria Carmen Esdaile (Philippines) was also part of the field.

However, both 2013 APT POY leaders came up short in this event. Rather it was Paul Yu, a local from Cebu, who bagged the side event win becoming the lone survivor after roughly 11 hours of play. Yu won PHP 209,200 for his efforts.
